These films keep returning to the same bleak arithmetic: a man rises, or survives, only by trading away whatever principle he started with, and the world around him — postwar Japan, colonial Vietnam, a lawless border, a dying frontier town — offers no exit from that trade. Betrayal isn't a plot twist here but the operating logic of every institution on screen, from yakuza clans to police departments to marriages, which is why vengeance, ambition, and even love curdle into something closer to self-destruction. What lingers isn't the violence itself but the exhaustion in these characters' eyes, the sense that they crossed a line so long ago they can no longer locate where it was.
