These movies borrow the costumes of horror, crime, and sci-fi—mad scientists, masked criminals, giant monsters, phantoms—while stripping out any real dread, treating villains and threats as excuses for slapstick, disguise gags, and gleeful chaos. The recurring move is genre pastiche played completely straight-faced in premise but broad and cartoonish in execution, so that a monster attack or master-criminal caper becomes an occasion for vaudeville timing rather than suspense. Across silent shorts, campy creature features, and rock-band sci-fi romps alike, menace is a punchline setup, never the point.
