What ties these together isn't discovery itself but the moment it turns against the discoverer: a well-meaning experiment, dig, or drilling operation breaches something that shouldn't have been disturbed, and the people who caused it are left trapped underground, underwater, or in over their heads with their own creation. Again and again the setting narrows into a sealed, lightless space — a cave, a sewer, a drilling rig, a tomb — where scientific curiosity curdles into claustrophobic dread. Even the gentler entries share the same DNA of digging into the past or the unknown and finding it looking back.
