International City Settings

These films use the foreign city not as backdrop but as a pressure chamber—Vienna, Moscow, Paris, Mexico City, Rome become places where characters are stripped of their usual footing, forced into masquerade, seduction, or surveillance among people who don't fully see them. Again and again a stranger (spy, servant, expatriate, tourist) discovers that charm and beauty conceal betrayal, exploitation, or self-destruction, so the glamour of the setting curdles into paranoia or grief. Even the lighter entries carry an undercurrent of performance and disguise, as if being abroad means playing a role you can't fully control.
