Crime and Corruption

The through-line here isn't crime itself but the rot underneath institutions meant to prevent it: police forces, newsrooms, hospitals, governments, and grand households all turn out to be running on complicity rather than integrity. Again and again an ordinary or naive figure — a photographer, a postman, a grieving father, an American tourist — stumbles into that machinery and has to decide whether to expose it or get swallowed by it. Even the lighter entries carry a whiff of impersonation and cover-up, as if nobody in this collection is quite who or what they claim to be.
