Ridiculous Plots, Genuine Emotion

Absurd Premises, Earnest Hearts

These are romantic comedies that reach for a gimmick — a hurricane, a Vegas wedding, a time loop, a Mars stowaway, electrical powers, a family curse — and then use that gimmick as a shortcut to intimacy rather than an obstacle to it. The contrivance forces two mismatched people into close quarters fast, and the movie's real interest lies in watching genuine affection grow out of that manufactured chaos. What unites them is a light, unembarrassed sincerity: however silly the setup, the emotional payoff is played straight.
